The town of Chepelare has 6067 inhabitans and
is 1100 m. above sea level. It is situated in the heart of the Rhodopi
mountains. Chepelare is 222 km. south-east of Sofia and 72 km. south
of Plovdiv. The town is a typical winter resort and is visited by
tourists and skiers. Chepelare is the town that is situated at a
highest altitude in Bulgaria. Chepelare as a setlement was founded
in 1726. There are several churches and museums that may be of interests
to the visiting tourists. To the people on holiday Chepelare offers
plenty of accomodations and yet during the winter months it is advisable
for the tourists to book in advance. There are more than 20 small
hotels and plenty of private lodgings in the town. Most of the hotels
have restaurants where tourists can order breakfast or dinner. Ski

The longest ski run in Bulgaria is in Chepelare. The skiing infrastructure
is basic, but very well maintained.There is a 2-chair lift with
total length of 2471 m and capacity of 700 persons per hour that
reaches the top of the mountain to Mechi Chal peak (1873 m) just
for 17 minutes, where the starting points of the ski runs are located.
A few smaller drag/towrope lifts are also are available for the
skiers to enjoy. The ski runs are open from December usually to
April depending on the snow conditions. The resort also offers a
lighted slope for children and beginners right in the center of
the town.
The runs vary in difficulty from black to green and are some of
the longest in Bulgaria. There are a total of 11,400 meters of ski
runs.
The only transport to Chepelare are bus lines. 15 km. from Chepelare
is the Rozhen Observatory which is open for tourists.
