Mountain Tourism - Pirin
Pirin is the second highest mountain in Bulgaria with the highest
peak being Vihren (2917 m.). Pirin is situated in the south-western
part of the Rilo-Rhodope massif. The climate of Pirin is mainly
Mediterranean. It is devided into three parts - Northern Pirin,
Mid Pirin and Southern Pirin. Northern Pirin is the highest, the
biggest and the most visited of the three. All glacial lakes in
Pirin are situated here. The biggest lake is Popovoto 124 decares.
It is also the deepest. Mid Pirin is the smallest part of the
mountain. The highest peak is Orelyak (2099 m.). Southern Pirin
is the lowest and most rarely visited part of the mountain. The
highest peak is Sveshtnik (1975 m.) Due to its uninque nature
almost the hole area of Northern Pirin is a national park.
Major hiking departure points
The town of Bansko is the entrance gate to Pirin. It is 160 km
south of Sofia and is connected to the remaining parts of the
country by bus and railway transport. Routes start from here for
the Bunderitsa chalet (3.30 h.), Vihren chalet -(4 h.) and Damyanitsa
chalet -(4 h.) , from where tourists can continue in various directions.

The village of Dobrinishte is situated 6 km. south of Bansko. It

The town of Gotse Delchev is 212 km south of Sofia and 22 km north
of the greek border. Tourists can depart from it along a marked
hiking route to the Popovi Livadi chalet (4.30 - 5 h.). Tourists
can continue to Mid and Northern Pirin from there or set out in
the opposite direction - to Southern Pirin. Gotse Delchev is the

The town of Sandanski is 165 km south of Sofia and 22 km north
of Koulata, in the valley of the Strouma River. The Popina Luka

(2 h.), Sinanitsa chalet (5 h.), Vihren Chalet (7 h .) and others.
The town of Kresna is 40 km south of Blagoevgrad. A route starts
out from there to Sinanitsa chalet (8 - 9 h.), from where various
directions can be chosen.
Predela Saddle bordering between Rila and Pirin, at 1142 metres
above sea level, is between Simitli and Razlog. Tourists can go
from here to the Yavorov chalet (5 h.), from where tourists can
continue along the karst ridge of Northern Pirin.
The town of Razlog is 155 km. south of Sofia and 6 km north of
Bansko. A route starts from it to the Yavorov chalet (4.30 - 5
h.). Razlog is the place where you, if you are interested in real
